Ladies and gentlemen, all friends, good evening!

    The year 2008 is just around the corner. It is our great pleasure to hold the New Year Reception in honour of Foreign Experts, Teachers and Students in Xinjiang.

    Friends, old and new, are getting together to bid farewell to the outgoing year and usher in the new. Hereby, on behalf of the People’s Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, I would like to extend my New Year greetings and best wishes to foreign experts and teachers devoted to education in Xinjiang. And my greetings also go to international students studying in Xinjiang. Welcome all of you to this New Year Reception! We really appreciate your great contributions to the education of Xinjiang over the past year! Wish you a happy new year!

    With the deepening of China’s reform and opening, especially since the implementation of Great Western Development Strategy, Xingjiang, is playing a significantly strategic role in its opening to the central and western Asia.

    Currently, there is the increasing number of foreign educational institutions, experts and scholars who come to Xinjiang for educational cooperation at different levels. Thus, International education exchange is in full swing, and comprehensive social benefits are appearing more noticeable.

    The number of long-term foreign experts and teachers working in Xinjiang this year is up to 260. More than 600 educational administrators, academic experts, scientific researchers, teachers and international students from abroad, HK, Macao and Taiwan paid short-term visit to Xinjiang. 17 international academic conferences, education forum and art exhibition were held. Chinese language popularization to central Asia and neighboring countries is developing faster and better.

    Up till now, the total number of international students studying here is over 2000. With the further development of the education of Xinjiang, this number will become even greater. To our great delight, international educational exchange has led to effective educational opening. The development of higher education, professional training, basic education, etc. attracts more international talents, introduces advanced foreign educational experience, enriches the educational managerial models, and opens various channels of talents’ cultivation. Therefore, the quality of education and scientific research in Xinjiang has been improved a lot, and the educational reform and opening has been promoted greatly.

    The development of the education in Xinjiang owes too much to your persistent support and effort. I would like to take this opportunity to show my respect for everyone present here tonight, and meanwhile, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the leaders and teachers devoted to our foreign educational affairs and so many thanks for great supports and hard work from relevant departments.

    In the coming year, we are going to further the educational opening so as to attract more international talents to join us in the modernization construction of Xinjiang, especially in the education field. Overseas students are greatly welcomed to study Chinese, traditional Chinese medicine and so on. We are expecting to get more of your help and guidance in the reform and development of the education here, and more of your constructive advice and suggestions. Let’s make joint effort for the further achievements in educational undertakings in Xinjiang.
